The search for a Simon Fraser University professor who went missing in Colombia has ended in tragic circumstances.
Family and colleagues of Ramazan (Ramo) Gencay say the B.C. man’s body was found and recovered by Colombian police outside of Medellin.
"Ramo will be deeply missed by the SFU community, and our hearts go out to his family, friends and SFU faculty, students and staff who worked with him," wrote SFU president Andrew Petter in a statement.
"I know how distressing this news is for the SFU community, and I wish to reassure everyone that we will continue to do everything we can to support Ramo’s family at this sad and difficult time."
Gencay was in Colombia attending seminars and was last seen at a salsa night club on Dec. 6, according to his wife.
Global Affairs Canada said it was providing consular assistance to Gencay’s family and “are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information.”
Gencay was a professor in the economic department at SFU.
In a statement issued by the university, Petter said everyone at the school "will be saddened by the tragic news of Professor Gencay’s death."
