On Monday morning, Oscar Arfmann pleaded not guilty before a trial by judge alone in a B.C. Supreme Court room in New Westminster, B.C.
The 66-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of an Abbotsford, B.C., police officer Const. John Davidson on Nov. 6, 2017.
Arfmann is accused of killing the 53-year-old police officer during an exchange of gunfire with police who were responding to a report of a possible stolen vehicle.
Const. Davidson worked as a police officer for 24 years, beginning his career in the United Kingdom before being hired by the Abbotsford Police Department in 2006.
He is survived by his wife and three adult children.
Last November, on the one year anniversary of his death, the Abbotsford Police Department honoured Const. Davidson with a memorial plaque.
“We will all remember John as a hero who put others before himself,” said Chief Constable Mike Serr in a speech.
“I also want to remember John for his commitment, his compassion, and his service to this community.”
