The search for a Surrey man who went missing at Buntzen Lake has ended in tragedy.
RCMP were called in to assist around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday after the 19-year-old disappeared under the water’s surface while swimming with friends.
After a 24-hour search, his body was pulled from the water by the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team around 6 p.m. on Wednesday night.
Divers found the man near where he was last seen, about 100 metres from shore in 40 metres of water.
Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of the Coquitlam RCMP says that authorities and Victim Services are doing their best to support the family.
“As our hot summer continues, we’d like to remind everyone to take precautions around our lakes and rivers,” said McLaughlin. “Even a well-managed, popular place like Buntzen Lake has inherent risks.”
An autopsy has been scheduled, but there’s no indication of foul play.
