Salmon Arm RCMP say five drivers were served immediate roadside prohibitions in a little more than two hours on Saturday night.
Police say the impaired driving investigations happened between 9:36 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. on June 13.
Four of the roadside prohibitions came from proactive police stops to check driver sobriety.
The fifth came after a complainant reported an intoxicated person in a parking lot.
RCMP say three drivers provided breath samples that registered a “fail.”
A fail carries a 90-day driving prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impound at the owner’s expense, fines, possible installation of an ignition interlock device and a requirement to complete the Responsible Driver Program.
One driver registered a “warn.”
Police say that can result in penalties depending on the driver’s history, including a three-day driving prohibition and fines for a first offence, a seven-day driving prohibition and fines for a second offence, or a 30-day driving prohibition and a requirement to complete the Responsible Driver Program for a third offence.
The fifth driver refused to provide a breath sample, which carries the same penalty as registering a fail.
“Salmon Arm RCMP continue to target impaired drivers at all hours of the day to keep their community safe,” said Const. Andrew Hodges.
“The Immediate Roadside Prohibition program is one of the tools used by police to remove impaired drivers off British Columbia’s roadways and keep our roads and communities safe.
“If you are planning on drinking, please do not drive. By finding an alternative way home such as transit, cabs, or a designated driver you can help ensure that you, and people sharing the road with you, get to their destination safely.”
