Historically, Thanksgiving is one of the most dangerous long weekends on BC roads.
With the road conditions swiftly changing from bare to slick, it can catch many drivers off guard.
On a typical Thanksgiving long weekend, there’s an average of 2,200 crashes, 7,00 injuries and four deaths on BC roads.
“It's only a few weeks into fall and snow has already blanketed parts of BC,” says a release from ICBC.
“As of Oct. 1, winter tires or chains are mandatory on many BC highways.”
Only highways in the Lower Mainland and on the southern tip of Vancouver Island are not included in those regulations.
To stay safe on the roads, ICBC is urging drivers to plan their route ahead of time, check their tires, slow down on wet roads and put phones away.
