Several pet rabbits have died after catching an “extremely infectious and lethal disease” in a downtown Vancouver apartment building.
British Columbia’s chief veterinary officer has issued an order under the Animal Health Act to stop owners moving their rabbits in or out of the apartment building.
Rabbits in the building will also receive a mandatory vaccination for rabbit haemorrhagic disease.
The disease is unique to rabbits, with humans and other animals free from any risk of infection.
It has previously been found in Richmond, Delta, Comox Valley and Parksville.
A special import permit has been obtained to supply vaccinations to vets across B.C.
If rabbit owners spot any signs of illness in their pets, they are advised to contact a vet immediately.
