WorkSafeBC releases industry-specific guidelines for businesses to reopen

Since Premier John Horgan announced BC’s restart plan last week, there’s been a bit of confusion on what guidelines businesses will need to follow to reopen.

Today, WorkSafeBC has finally released its industry-specific guidelines for businesses and more, which will help them navigate the next phase of the province’s restart plan.

“Every employer is required to have a COVID-19 Safety Plan that assesses the risk of exposure at their worksite and implements measures to keep their workers safe,” says Al Johnson, head of prevention services at WorkSafeBC.

“We’ve developed both general and industry-specific materials in consultation with industry and labour stakeholders to ensure they are practical and understandable for workplaces in each sector.”

Guidelines are now available for restaurants, cafes, pubs, salons, other personal services, real estate, retail, in-person counselling and plenty more.

WorkSafeBC also has resources available for businesses like workplace posters, information on hygiene, a COVID-19 safety plan template and more.

Employers do not need to submit a safety plan for review or approval, but WorkSafeBC prevention officers will begin a province-wide verification and inspection initiative.

“The planning process should involve workers for their input to ensure their concerns are heard and addressed,” said Johnson.

WorkSafeBC will continue to develop more industry-specific information and guidelines for future phases of BC’s restart plan as we reach those points.
