Hwy 1 to see spring closures, delays as crews finish Kicking Horse Canyon work

Phase four of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project essentially wrapped up in the fall and the brand new highway east of Golden fully opened to traffic.

The new four-lane Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) has not seen any planned delays or closures since, but that will change this spring.

Starting on Tuesday, April 2, crews will begin the finishing touches on phase four of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project, which will result in Hwy 1 being reduced to one lane in each direction.

It will stay that way until the end of June, allowing crews to safely complete paving, line painting, wildlife fencing and landscaping, the Ministry of Transportation says.

The Ministry also warns of full closures of up to two hours on April 3, April 15, April 29, May 13, June 10, June 11, June 24 and June 25.

In addition, drivers may encounter brief two-minute stoppages at any time.

“Drivers are also reminded that the speed limit on this section of Hwy 1 is reduced to 50 km/h until the work is completed,” the Ministry wrote in a release. “When the new four-lane divided highway is completed it will have a speed limit of 100 km/h.”

The closure schedule is subject to change and travellers can stay up to date on the situation by visiting the project’s website.
