Firefighters Gaining the Upper Hand On South Okanagan Wildfires

There is a bit of good news Thursday morning as one of the wildfires burning in the South Okanagan is fully contained.

The Wilson’s Mountain fire burning near Oliver is now 100 per cent contained according to the BC Wildfire Service. The fire, located one kilometre north of Oliver, remains at 317 hectares in size and 15 firefighters are still working in the area. But thanks to their tireless effort, they have established a guard around portions of the perimeter.

Meanwhile, progress is being made on the Testalinden Creek wildfire as crews now have that blaze 50 per cent contained. The estimated size of this wildfire, burning seven kilometres south of Oliver, is 2,500 hectares. Air tankers, nine helicopters, and 119 firefighters continue to work on the wildfire to establish full containment. Smoke from the Testalinden Creek wildfire will continue to be seen, in Oliver and along Highway 97, as combustible material continues to burn naturally on the slopes.

Several evacuation alerts still remain in place for homes located near both of the wildfires.
