2016 Starlight Gala a success
The 2016 Starlight Gala, held last month at the Coast Capri Hotel, saw guests tumble down the rabbit hole to experience a little madness in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
The dramatically styled, Alice in Wonderland themed event, raised close to $107,000 that will be used to accelerate the discovery, development, and delivery of cutting edge advances to cure, better treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes. During its eleven-year run, the event has raised close to $1.5 million.
Okanagan Tim Hortons deliver 35,000 smiles to YMCA Kids
Tim Hortons restaurants in the Central Okanagan donated $35,488 from their annual Smile Cookie Campaign to the YMCA of Okanagan. The campaign, which ran for a week in September, saw tens of thousands of Tim Hortons customers purchase a Smile Cookie for a dollar,m with 100 per cent of the proceeds donated to the YMCA.
“I can’t think of a charity that is more deserving, or makes a bigger impact on the lives of kids and families in the Okanagan, than the YMCA,” said tim Hortons representative Chris Chapman.
Funds from the campaign support the YMCA Strong Kids Healthy Snacks Program, where the YMCA provides nutritious snacks for children participating in their preschool and child care programs.
Free fixes at Repair Cafe
The RDCO’s Regional Waste Reduction Office’s Repair Café runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the brand new Trades Building at Okanagan College today. Fueled entirely by volunteer fixers, the event is free to the public.
The event is a great way for people to get more use out of their items, and save them from landfilling, in a revival of the whole culture of repair, reuse and re-purpose.
New for the Nov. 5 event, thanks to partners Electro Recycle, is a free bbq lunch for bringing in a small appliance to be fixed or recycled. It if can’t be fixed, you’ll be able to recycle your small appliance or power tool right there.
Okanagan Boys and Girls Club holds annual auction
The Okanagan Boys and Girls Club’s fourth annual action is switching things up: instead of hosting an elaborate gala or complicated tournament, donors can give to specific Boys and Girls Clubs initiatives from the comfort of their homes.
Along with options to give a homeless teen a week of shelter, food, and support and helping fund the communtiy kitchen program, other items up for bid include WestJet Gift of Flight and an Alex Fong watercolour print. With no extra event costs, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs will receive all of the proceeds for the non-directed items up for bid.
The online acution is already in progress, and you can participate online at the Boys and Girls Club website.
Lest we Forget: UBCO remembrance Day ceremony.
Wednesday, November 9, starting at 10:45 a.m., in the UBCO courtyard, faculty and staff at UBC Okanagan take a moment to remember Canada’s fallen soldiers at a special Remembrance Day service. The colour party from Kelowna’s Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, will be on hand to mark the event
Campus administrators, students, and an employee who is also a veteran, will speak briefly about the importance of Remembrance Day. Students will participate by reading In Flanders Fields, singing “O Canada” and laying wreaths. The traditional two minutes of silence, along with a bugle reveille and bagpipe lament will be part of the formal service.
