Students to Vote on U-Pass Fare Increase

Students at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus (UBCO) will be voting for the proposed fee increase that is part of regular transit fare increases.

The increase will ensure that Kelowna Regional Transit can continue providing a U-Pass and transit improvements to students in the Okanagan. The increase would be an additional $10 a semester, and would come into effect September 2016.

Students are currently paying $60.00 per semester and it would be increased to $70.00.

The U-Pass first became a mandatory thing for all UBC students who are members of the UBC Students’ Union Okanagan (UBCSUO) and have been assessed the UBCOSU fee in 2007. The last vote was held four years ago.

The question students will answer on November 4th and 5th is if they’re in favour of increasing the mandatory U-Pass fee. If there’s a “no” majority Kelowna Regional Transit has the right to terminate the U-Pass agreement or reduce service levels, as said in the U-Pass agreement. If students vote no, changes would come into effect September 2016.

The vote takes place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the University Centre Building. Students must bring their student cards to vote.
