Universities around the world are often home to the next generation's brightest minds.
UBCO is no exception and over the long weekend, the university played host to some of the Okanagan's next big ideas.
The first annual Inventathon brought teams of students from the Okanagan to UBCO to design innovative and socially impactful solutions for both students and the community.
The event was based off a popular trend in the computer science world called Hackathon.
A Hackathon is an event where teams of developers have 24 hours to build a working app, website or conceptual program related to the events given topic.
This year, the projects were presented to 15 judges made up of professors from different disciplines and experts from different industries in Kelowna such as the Okanagan Young Professional Collective.
The winning project was created by a team from Okanagan College called Pegasus Reloaded.
The team created a system for a social program that makes it easier for restaurants to recycle food waste. The design allows food that hasn't been consumed in the restaurant to be donated to the less fortunate or resold to the second-hand food economy.
Inventathon is expected to become an annual event that will facilitate the building of a startup community at UBC Okanagan by encouraging innovative and socially impactful solutions.
