Kelowna’s Thys Weststrate named conference all-star after big season with UBCO

Following one of the best individual seasons in UBCO men’s volleyball team history, Kelowna’s Thys Weststrate has been named a Canada West conference first-team all-star.

This is the first time a UBCO men’s volleyball player has earned first-team all-star honours as past athletes Lars Bornemann and Nate Speijer were named second-team all-stars.

"Thys put together an outstanding season and it is a tremendous honour for our program to have him recognized as a Canada West all-star," said UBCO head coach Scott Koskie.

"Thys is a great person who has worked extremely hard to elevate his game and become a top player in this league. We are proud of his efforts this season and congratulate him on this award."

Weststrate finished second in the conference with a .451 hitting percentage and 1.16 blocks per set.

The Kelowna Secondary School graduate recently helped the Heat nab its third-ever Canada West playoff berth by being an offensive and a defensive threat.

Weststrate managed 132 kills and led the Heat with 3.1 points per set. On the defensive side of the ball, the middle notched the conference's third-best number of blocks with 73.

The Kelowna athlete also had 63 digs and a career-best 18 service aces, the 10th most in a single season in program history.

Weststrate added 14 kills, seven blocks, seven digs and 19 total points while hitting .444 in the Heat's two playoff games against the University of Manitoba.
