There was no catching Abigail Yakemchuk and Ella Wigmore over the weekend.
The two UBCO Heat cross-country runners earned the school’s top finishes at the BC Club Championships at Crescent Park in Surrey, the final meet before the 2023 Canada West Championships.
Yakemchuk and Wigmore came first and second in the women’s U20 six-kilometre race, with respective times of 23:10.3 and 23:53.6, to secure their spots on the U20 BC team.
In the men’s U20 six-kilometre race, Owen Lloyd was the top Heat runner, coming fifth with a time of 25:50.3, while teammates Kyle Porter and Isaac Baker weren’t far behind.
Tori Bouck and Christopher Crowe represented UBCO in the senior eight-kilometre races, with Bouck securing 12th place in the women’s run and Crowe getting 26th on the men’s side.
The Heat have just over a week to prepare for the 2023 Canada West Championships, which will be held at Kelowna’s Mission Recreation Park on Saturday, Oct. 28.
The event is free for the public to attend and check out some of the best long-distance runners from Western Canada’s university ranks.
