After more than 20 years in Vancouver, the headquarters of UBC’s acclaimed Wine Research Centre is moving to Kelowna.
The school announced today that the WRC would now have a hub in Kelowna, but still maintain a dual-campus presence between Vancouver and Kelowna.
“All the major research and education wine institutes in the world are situated in close proximity to vineyards, wineries and wine visitors,” said Jacques-Olivier Pesme, the WRC’s newly appointed director.
“The WRC will combine operations between the Okanagan—home to more than 80% of BC vineyard acreage, and Vancouver—a gateway to the world.”
First established at UBC’s Vancouver campus in 1999, the WRC undertakes cutting-edge research in oenology, viticulture, management and social sciences.
This Kelowna move will enhance the post-secondary institution’s wine research and education, while also supporting and stimulating the province’s economy.
Around 12,000 people are employed within BC’s wine industry, which has an annual economic impact of $2.8-billion.
“Because the WRC is now headquartered in the heart of BC’s wine country, it is well-positioned to engage even more deeply with growers, wineries, tourists and residents,” says Pesme.
“I am excited to be guiding the centre in its role as a contributor to the continued growth and the success of this rapidly changing wine territory, and especially to reinforce its international reputation.”
There are nearly 1,000 vineyards and more than 350 licensed wineries in BC.
