Heart patients in the Okanagan often need the services of an electrophysiology lab. The problem is, they have to go to the lower mainland to get it. That's why there's a $7 million campaign underway to bring those services to KGH. That's the goal at today's Day of Giving at KGH.
By midday, the event had already raised close to $650,000 with donations still pouring in.
The Porubanec family agreed to match funds raised in today's event, but they had to set a maximum. And when that maximum was reached, things got even more interesting. Another mystery donor agreed to step-in and match donations for the rest of the day. "We want to make sure that this is going to get completed," said Darryl Porubanec. "Our family feels very strongly that there are a lot of people in the interior that need this kind of service." For the Porubanecs, it hits close to home. "Both our sons have gone through the EP Lab before," said Darryl's wife Margaret.
KGH Foundation CEO Doug Rankmore said it's been overwhelming."It's just been an incredible outpouring from the community," Rankmore said the benefits of the lab will be more than just a convenience for cardiac patients. "This is a lifesaving intervention being brought to KGH."
The goal is to have the lab operational by the end of the year.
