Colin Basran has a serious challenger in the upcoming muncipal election. Tom Dyas was twice elected President of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce and on Wednesday he announced his candidacy today for Mayor at Roxby Square in Rutland.
Dyas, who considers Basran a friend, said he expects the campaign to be congenial, but at the same time he expects there will be "moments".
Dyas said win or lose, a tight race for mayor will be a driving force for stronger discussions on the issues.
"We can do better," said Dyas.
The President of the local insurance company, TD Benefits, Dyas avoided any direct criticism of incumbent Mayor Colin Basran, but he did say there is a need for strong leadership.
"I believe there has been a lack of consultation and transparency." Dyas was also critical of the size of recent tax increases.
He is currently chairing the bid committee that's trying to secure the 2020 Memorial Cup for Kelowna.
Three other potential candidates, Bobby Kennedy, Josh Hoggan and Bob Schewe, have also filed nomination forms.
