There's no way to dance around it. Homelessness remains a huge problem in Kelowna. That's why Interior Beverages and Canadian Mental Health are teaming up for a fundraiser at Kelowna's OK Corral Cabaret.
"We wanted to help the homeless," said Ken Millen. But he and his team at Interior Beverages wondered. "How do you do it?" At first they brainstormed about providing food an other essentials, but then decided to focus on trying to help with the real underlying problems. "What we wanted to do is have a solution, and Canadian Mental Health has that," said Millen. "It's a long journey," adds Sarah Lust from the Canadian Mental Health Association in Kelowna. "Some people might say, 'Why hasn't this been addressed yet?'" Lust, like many who have explored the issue agrees that the first step is providing housing, and then there's a chance to deal with the underlying problems. "You provide them with the wrap-around supports while they're on their journey to recovery."
The event: Help the Homeless is at the OK Corral, featuring the Lost N Found Band
Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, with all proceeds going to Canadian Mental Health's initiatives towards supporting the efforts to get Kelowna's homeless population properly housed.
