Vegfest Kelowna is coming up May 26th. This year's event is at Immaculata Regional Highschool in Kelowna. It's a new location and it's been condensed to a single day. We spoke to organizer Dr. Moira Drosdevich about the event and why more and more people are going vegan.
One example of how common veganism is getting is that there will be five food trucks serving up food at the event. "We can very much see that the whole vegan movement or plant-based movement, in general, is growing in leaps and bounds', said Drosdevich. "We have on facebook here in town we've got a Facebook page group called Kelowna Vegan Supporters and it started out about a year and change ago and now it's got 22 hundred people on it."
Drosdevich said it's the animal cruelty factor that is the most compelling reason for people to join the veganism movement, with environmental concerns close behind. Drosdevich sites a recent United Nations report which said that more people need to eat a plant-based diet if we are going to get a handle on climate change. She hopes a lot of non-vegans come to the event, and even if they introduce more plant-based food into their diets, then that's a step in the right direction.
Vegfest will feature not just food, but clothing and accessories, health and beauty products, speakers, workshops, live music, kids activities and more. Money raised at the event will go to support six local animal sanctuaries.
