On Thursday, selected students from Rutland Senior and Rutland Middle School participated in the first Rutland Community Youth Summit. The event took place at the YMCA Central Okanagan and included invited community members and keynote speakers.
The goal of the Summit was to give students a say in the future of their community. Students were encouraged to think big and create a wish list of sorts.
“It's about giving students a voice, so that the programs that are offered, and the opportunities available for them are coming from them,” explains Rutland Senior Secondary Vice Principal Russ Bischoff. “As an adult, I’m a learner too, and there is so much I can learn from the ideas from these young people.
One of the keynote speakers was RSS graduate and athlete Roz Huber. She talked about her time playing university basketball and becoming a personal trainer, she also spoke about the importance of giving back and being genuine. “It’s really powerful when you have that uninhibited voice of the youth heard.”
