Overnight Work Keeps Westside Road Wildfire at 430 Hectares

The wildfire burning along Westside Road remains at 430 hectares, but crews managed to make gains overnight on Tuesday.

The evacuation order remains in effect for the 70 properties in the affected area along the road. Properties affected by the order include those from 3985 Westside Road north to Las Casa Resort, and Denison Road, Shelter Cove Road and Deighton Road. North Westside and Wilsons Landing structural fire crews knocked down a few hotspots during their overnight patrols through the evacuated area.

Officials confirm that no houses have been lost. The incident commander will be meeting Wednesday morning to determine the plan of attack for the day. The Wildfire Service says Tuesday’s aerial attack focused on building and reinforcing retardant lines along the northern and southern flanks of the fire while on the ground crews and equipment established hand and machine guards.

A total of 59 people have registered at the Emergency Support Services Reception Centre and the centre will reopen at 8:30 a.m. at Westbank Lions Community Hall, 2466 Main Street in West Kelowna. Premier Christy Clark will be in West Kelowna Wednesday to give an update regarding the fire situation. She will be joined by Forests Minister Steve Thomson at 10:30 a.m.
