Firefighters finish what employees started to put out fire at West Kelowna business

An afternoon fire at a West Kelowna business was slowed by employees before the professionals came in and finished the job.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue was called to Kelowna Electroplating on Ross Road around 1:30 pm today after receiving reports of the fire.

Engine 32 from Lakeview Heights was the first on scene and found smoke billowing from the front of the building.

“Crews entered the building through an open garage door, and found a fire in a metal shavings hopper,” explained Brent Watson, assistant fire chief with WKFR.

“Employees had slowed the fire with an extinguisher before safely evacuating the building, and West Kelowna crews were able to quickly finish the job with a single hose line.”

Firefighters remain on scene and are ventilating the building to remove heavy smoke that accumulated inside.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported and the fire is not considered suspicious.
