Several regional parks in West Kelowna are now closed due to the McDougall Creek wildfire.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) said it has closed the parks that are within the current evacuation alert “out of an abundance of caution.”
The affected parks include:
“The closures were put in place to protect public safety and to limit the number of people in the evacuation alert area,” the RDCO explains.
“Residents are asked to respect signage, watch for barricades and stay out of the parks until further notice.”
Discovered Tuesday night, the McDougall Creek wildfire ballooned from four to 64 hectares on Wednesday and is located around 10 kilometres north of West Kelowna.
The fire remains out of control and an evacuation alert has been issued for 4,800 properties in West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation and the Central Okanagan West Electoral Area.
While the fire is still a distance away from the city, strong winds are expected to increase fire activity significantly throughout the day.
