UPDATE: Wildfire burning near Merritt rendered under control

(UPDATE - Apr. 24 @ 3:15 p.m.): BC Wildfire has confirmed that the 112-hectare wildfire burning near Merritt is now under control.

According to Hannah Swift, Fire Information Officer with BC Wildfire, smoke from the Minnie Lake Road fire may still be visible from nearby.

No crews are on site today, she said, but they are expecting to attend to the fire later this week to analyze its conditions.

BC Wildfire does not anticipate any more growth from the fire.

(Update - 4:00 p.m.): A wildfire near Merritt has expanded in size yet again.

The blaze now sits at 112 hectares, though fire information officers have stated it is "being held."

(Update - 1:45 p.m.): A wildfire burning just east of Merritt has almost doubled in size.

The Minnie Lake Road fire was discovered on Monday at 50 hectares, though now covers 80 hectares of land.

According to fire information officer Hannah Swift, the fire is currently "being held" by nine crew members.

Though the cause isn't determined, people are expected to be the reason.

(Original - 9:45 a.m.): The Kamloops Fire Centre is home to two new fires as of Monday.

A 6-hectare fire was spotted near Hembrie Mountain while a 50-hectare fire was discovered on Minnie Lake Road near Merritt.

Both fires are suspected to be caused by humans.
