UPDATE: Sabiston Creek wildfire now 'being held' at 200-hectares

(Update - June 7th, 10:15 a.m.): Some good news out of the BC Wildfire Service today as they announced the Sabiston Creek wildfire is officially "being held."

According to fire information officer Marla Catherall, controlled burns played a key role in preventing the fire from spreading further.

"That definitely played a factor in the classification change," said Catherall.

"The classification has now been changed to being held. It is still estimated at 200-hectares in size, and we have 20 personnel on site today."

Catherall went on to say the BC Wildfire Service doesn't anticipate any further spread of this wildfire.

(Update - June 6th, 4:00 p.m.): The Sabiston Creek wildfire has now reached 200 hectares in size.

Crews will be conducting controlled burns in an effort to remove unburnt fuels between the edge of the fire and the control line.

NowMedia will update the story when more information is available.

(Original - June 6th, 11 a.m.): The BC Wildfire Service continues to battle a wildfire that originated west of Savona on Wednesday afternoon.

According to fire information officer Marla Catherall, the Sabiston Creek has reached 100-hectares in size and is still classified as "out of control."

"So it is still estimated at 100-hectares in size right now," said Catherall. "But we do have ground crews that are doing more accurate mapping so we should have an update on that shortly."

Catherall adds that 33 personnel are on the scene fighting the massive blaze.

"We do have 33 personnel on site today, some of those are BC Wildfire Service personnel and some of those are contract crews. They are putting a hand-guard on the east flank."

Catherall mentioned that there has been no air-tankers dropping retardent so far today.

"So we don't have any air support on site today, but the air support that we did have yesterday evening was successful."

"It is still classified as out of control, but we aren't seeing any out of the ordinary fire behaviour or anything like that right now."
