Canada claims its first ever World Rugby Sevens cup

After 140 tries, Canada is finally at the top of the World Rugby Sevens world.

The men’s rugby team beat the U.S. squad 26-19 on Sunday to claim gold in the Singapore stop of the World Rugby Sevens Series.

After winning two games and losing just one on Saturday, Canada earned a place in Sunday’s cup competition.

The Canadians knocked off New Zealand and then England on Sunday to advance to the finals against the Americans.

“We showed up today and showed the world that we can beat anyone,” said team captain John Moonlight. “We beat three of the top four teams here so we’re flying.”

His thoughts were echoed by Nathan Hirayama, who had a hat trick in the quarterfinals against New Zealand and was named Player of the Final.

“We’ve been working so hard, a lot of us for so long, and it feels so good to put a tournament together and get it done,” Hirayama said.

Sunday’s final was locked in a 19-19 draw as the clock rolled down under two minutes to play.

That’s when Lucas Hammond picked up a loose ball, found a seam and beelined to the end zone to score the winning try.

The team will be able to soak in the win for a few days before regrouping and getting ready for the next stop in the World Rugby Sevens Series season, which is May 13th and 14th in Paris.
