OT field goal propels Sun to B.C. junior football title game

A 34-yard field goal from Kealey Heintz in overtime earned the Okanagan Sun a 26-23 semifinal win over the Langley Rams on Sunday and the opportunity to defend their B.C. Junior Football Conference championship.

The Sun will meet the first-place Westshore Rebels at Westhills Stadium in Langford Oct. 29 for the B.C. conference Cullen Cup championship. The winner will play host to the Canadian Bowl on Nov. 12.

The Sun then used two Kasey Russell runs to set up Heintz, who made no mistake, kicking the ball through the middle of the uprights for his fourth field goal on four attempts on the day.

Foster Martens started the game at quarterback and finished with six completions on 13 attempts for 63 yards, while Keith Zyla was 4-for-11 for 100 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown bomb to Shamar Donelson.

The only other major the Sun would score came off an eight yard run from Lliam Wishart in the first quarter.

The Sun went into the semifinal with a second-place record of 7-3 while the Rams were third in the regular season with a 6-4 mark.
