BC men’s and women’s curling champs crowned

After a week of competition at the Archie Browning Sports Centre on Vancouver Island, BC’s representatives at the country's two largest curling events have been decided.

Representing BC at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts will be Team Grandy of Vancouver after defeating Team Brown of Kamloops.

In the final, Team Grandy had the hammer in the second end and took control of the match by scoring five points.

The Vancouver squad kept their momentum going by putting up crooked numbers in the third and sixth ends, cruising to an 11-3 win.

“It feels amazing. I'm really proud of the team for what we put together this week,” said skip Clancy Grandy.

As of Monday afternoon, Team Brown will also head to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts after receiving a wild card spot at the event.

Team Brown was one of the two highest-ranked squads across Canada that did not win their respective provincial event.

Representing BC at the Montana’s Brier will be Team Schneider of the Victoria Curling Club after defeating Team Montgomery of the same club.

Unlike the women’s final, this match would remain tied until the sixth end when Team Schneider managed to put a single on the board.

Team Montgomery then answered back with a deuce in the seventh end, but the lead did not last for long.

Catlin Schneider led the squad to three points in the eighth end, eventually adding a single in the ninth to take the 5-2 win.

“It means a lot to be able to qualify for the Brier to be hosted in my hometown, Regina,” said skip Catlin Schneider.

The Scotties Tournament of Hearts is scheduled to take place from February 16-25 in Calgary. Afterwards, the Montana’s Brier will get underway March 1-10 in Regina.
