Those rumours were shot down Monday morning, but not before some damage had been done.
On Sunday, Toronto Sun journalist Steve Simmons wrote in his Sunday column that it has not been confirmed that the 85-year-old will return next fall.
“One thing that hasn’t been confirmed for the next season of Hockey Night In Canada: the return of Don Cherry and Coach’s Corner,” said Simmons.
Rogers, who owns Hockey Night in Canada, recently let go of NHL analyst Doug MacLean and long time radio host Bob McCown.
However, if Cherry isn’t returning for his 39th year on Hockey Night in Canada he has yet to be informed of it.
“I must say I am hurt and disappointed that my friend Steve Simmons would suggest in his Sunday column that Hockey Night in Canada might not want me back for next year. I was told a week after the playoffs I would be back,” said Cherry.
“The question I ask is this… why didn’t my friend Steve phone me and ask me?”
