Drag racing fans in for treat at Club Car Challenge Sunday in Osoyoos

Drag racing fans are in for a real treat and will get a real “bang for their buck” as the Wine Country Racing Assocation (WRCA) hold its annual Club Car Challenge this weekend.

More than 100 cars from numerous car clubs across the Okanagan Valley will be gathering at the Richter Motorpass Speedway at the Osoyoos Airport facility for the annual Club Car Challenge, said WCRA director Ken Brown.

He expects a really nice crowd this Sunday, Sept. 23 as there hasn’t been a WCRA drag racing event since June 17, said Brown.

Event organizers will be setting up the track Saturday afternoon and some drivers do come out to have their engines tested, with driver registration starting early Sunday morning and time trials beginning at 10 a.m., said Brown.

“We’re going to have 100-plus cars there this weekend,” he said. “The Club Car Challenge is our big event of year and I believe this is our ninth of tenth annual.

“All of the car clubs within the Valley, as long as they bring a minimum of six entrants with street legal cars, are invited to come up,” he said. "They all throw $250 in the pot and they all race off in brackets to the bitter end. Winner takes all, trophy and money.”

The money goes to the winning car club, while the members share the glory.

“It’s all about bragging rights,” he said.

Car clubs from Kelowna, Penticton, Oliver have confirmed participation and it looks like a team from Enderby is also going to compete, he said.

“There’s word on the street that the Street Outlaw Boys from Kelowna might be showing up,” he said. “It’s our big weekend of the year. It stresses all of our volunteers out, but we have a ton of fun.”

One adult ticket is $10 for a full day of exciting drag racing, said Brown.

“It’s a good bang for your buck for spectators,” he said. “It’s 10 bucks a head at the gate and you have 100-plus cars, so you’ve got a car show and great racing all in one venue. You can’t beat it.”

This Club Car Challenge always draws the best crowds of the year and Brown is expecting several hundred people will show up for this year's event.
