Silye scores a pair to lead Vees to win over Surrey at BCHL Showcase opener

David Silye scored a pair of goals to lead the Penticton Vees to a 4-1 win over the Surrey Eagles at the Bauer BCHL Showcase Thursday morning in Chilliwack.

Lukas Sillinger opened up the scoring for the Vees just 22 seconds into the game. Mason Snell took a slap shot from the mid point that was stopped by Cayden Bailey, but the rebound popped loose for Sillinger who hooked the puck around the goaltender for his second goal of the season.

Kenny Johnson extended the Vees lead after his wrist shot deflected off a Surrey player and into the net.Neither team would find the back of net in the second period as the Vees led on the shot clock 22-20.

Surrey would start the third period on the power play after Jack LaFontaine was called for delay of game after clearing the puck over the glass.

Just as the power play expired, Chase Stevenson fired a pass from the left half wall to Eric Linell who had moved in from the blue line. Linell had a tap in for his fifth goal of the season.

A little over five minutes later, Drew Elser took a heavy hit from Cody Schiavon in the corner of the Surrey end and Luke Loheit came to Elser’s defence. The two players traded blows before falling to the ice and being ejected from the game for fighting.

During the ensuing four on four, Silye came in on a Surrey defender one on one and faked him out, allowing Silye to walk towards the goaltender and slide a backhander through the five hole to give Penticton a 3-1 lead.

Silye would then hit the empty net while shorthanded with 2:34 remaining to seal the win.

Right off the next faceoff, Peter Muzyka was on the receiving end of a late check from behind by Sam Feldman, who was thrown out of the game and given a checking from behind major.

The Vees now get set to take on the Prince George Spruce Kings who played the West Kelowna Warriors Thursday afternoon.

The Vees will battle Prince George on Friday at 4 p.m.
