PSA: Don't forget to shovel your sidewalk, it's the law!

As Kelowna deals with its second major blast of winter, residents are reminded to shovel their own sidewalks and driveways.

While city crews handle the snow and ice removal on city streets, property owners and renters are responsible for clearing snow from sidewalks and driveways on their own property.

The bylaw isn’t just for houses either, as it applies to local businesses too.

“It’s a bylaw, so we encourage businesses to remove the snow themselves,” said Ryan Watters from the Downtown Kelowna Association.

By law, residents and business owners have 24 hours to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their home or business.

The city also encourages people to become a “Snow Buster” and help their neighbours and friends out with snow removal.

People can nominate those who help others with snow removal through the City of Kelowna website, and those “Snow Busters” will have a chance to win themselves Kelowna Rockets tickets.

Dick and Brenda Auclair won in December, while Ross McCorkle won in January.

Residents are also reminded, if possible, to move their vehicles off the roads to help snow crews move through residential areas more efficiently.

The City removes snow and de-ices municipal roads based on their priority status, with major arteries in the city receiving treatment more often than smaller side streets.

Priority one includes high-traffic roads like Gordon Drive. Priority three includes roads like Richter Street and school zones. Priority three covers most side streets, while priority four includes laneways.
