Okanagan heatwave making headlines internationally

Media from around the world are fascinated by the Okanagan's monster heat dome.

Outlets carrying stories about the historic heatwave include CNN, the BBC, France24, Al Jazeera, Times of India, Reuters, the Washington Post, New York Times and The Guardian in London, England.

</who>The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) generated this weather graphic to go with its stories on the Okanagan and BC heatwave.

The New York Times article by Vjosa Isai and Dan Bilefsky highlighted the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada: the 49.6C or 121.3 fahrenheit in Lytton on Tuesday.

Kelowna also set a record with 45.7C on Tuesday, or 114.3 fahrenheit.

Remember, the Americans still use fahrenheit and such a measurement tends to make the temperatures of 110-plus look and sound even more dramatic.

The New York Times story also mentioned how: "Lettuce plants shriveled in the Okanagan Valley, BC's picturesque wine region."

The article said people were checking out of their un-air conditioned homes and checking into hotels with air conditioning.

Many of the other stories in media as varied as CNN, the BBC, France24, the Times of India, Al Jazeera (the Middle East TV news channel) and Reuters (the international news agency) concentrated on the 486 heat-related deaths in BC, mostly seniors in the Lower Mainland where home air conditioning isn't as common.

Most of the coverage was extensive and made the link to climate change causing additional, longer and more extreme heatwaves.
