For a long time I was a little skeptical of head scarves, but I tried out my first one last September and I must say I really love the look. Not only is it a fun accessory to include in your summer wardrobe, it’s also an easy way to disguise dirty hair that still looks pretty cute. I will admit that sometimes head scarves can look a little bit goofy, so I put together a few instructions explaining some of my favourite head wrapping methods.
This one is probably my favourite, and it’s so simple. Use a rectangular scarf, or even just a length of fabric. Start with the scarf behind your head, with equal amounts of scarf on each side of your head. Bring the two ends to meet in the middle of your head, cross them, then grab each end with your opposite hand, so the end that’s in your left hand ends up in your right hand and vice versa, to make a twist. Bring the ends around to the back of your head and tie in a knot.
This one I find looks best with your hair up. Using a square scarf, fold the scarf in half diagonally, then in half again, and again, until you get the desired width of scarf. Start with the scarf behind your head and one end in each hand. Knot the scarf in the front twice. Tuck the ends back into the sides of the scarf.
This one works best with a large square scarf, or a long rectangular scarf. Fold the scarf in half diagonally, and in half again, and so forth, until the scarf reaches the desired width. Wrap the scarf around your head and secure in a double knot on either the side of your head, just above your ear, or on the back of your head. Allow the ends of the scarf to dangle.
The nice thing about the above ways to tie your scarf is that they require little to no attention to your actual hair, so they are perfect for mornings when you’re in a rush. The following way requires a little more effort.
Start off by pulling up the top layers of your hair, from about the middle of your scalp to your crown. Brush this hair so that it’s all going in one direction towards the back of your head, like you’re putting it in a ponytail. Now back comb this section of hair, and then shape it until it makes a nice round pouf. Secure it with bobby pins. Fold your scarf in half several times until it is in a rectangular shape. Bring the middle of the scarf to the bottom of your pouf, wrap the scarf around your head, and double knot it in the back. Allow the ends of the scarf to dangle at the back.
