Debra Pender knows what it means to run a sustainable business in Kelowna. She has been anchoring Beyond Wrapture Day Spa for 21 years and still never tires of the visible difference she sees in clients after they have received their treatment. At Beyond Wrapture, they love to do Spa Services & Esthetics treatments and have become know for Vinotherapy treatments because they are very unique and “having one of those treatments is like going out and buy an entire new body of skin”. Those types of changes are what keep Debra motivated to do what she does, that and her Chihuahuas that she comes home to each day. Today Debra and Beyond Wrapture Day Spa are In Focus.
What do you always find yourself saying?
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Dalai Lama – He is calm amid continuous persecution of his country he continues to be capable of love, understanding and peace for all
If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
I think that an innovation award for spawning an entire new industry in Kelowna (OK Valley) would be appropriate because these types of businesses never existed when I first started now there are 20 – 30 + day spas I think
If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
Carl Jung – he coined the word synchronicity and the energy that is being created at that time … there is no past present and future it is ALL NOW. I think he is the one who really began the development of self improvement thought.
Who inspires you?
Oh my, there is a list that I would not know where to begin in regards to people but if just to think “who” I have to say just the ‘universe’ because I am amazed at just waking up in the morning and being alive. My mother gave me poem out of a Newspaper years ago – I still carry it in my wallet: Don’t You Quit
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
Whe he might have captured the victor's cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It might be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
To visit The Great Wall of China , Easter Island & the Ancient Ruins of Karnak
If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
Mandela – that’s so easy!
If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
Today Tomorrow – I cant go far in the future because it changes continually … that to me is just setting up for disappointment … I will book a plane fare a few months in advance but that’s it. I do business plans to map my route and plans for business but to set an actual date – that’s a tough question I cant really answer that one
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about my work and my animals – I still LOVE going to work every day and making people happy and I LOVE coming home to my Chihuahuas who make a rough day disappear.
What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Well I have to say January 14 1982. Its not easy raising a child but still to this day the miracle of birth is just amazing to me and once you have been touched with that depth of love there is nothing else that comes close.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Being able to say I am in my 21st year of business, it makes me proud to know that my clients know I intend to stay in business and that Beyond Wrapture will always be there.
Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
I guess its Earl’s – love the atmosphere … consistent Management – Brad Atwell & above all I LOVE THE CHICKEN WINGS and DIP!
What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna?
Walking on Abbot Street or Waterfront Park because I enjoy the view … Kelowna is a beautiful city and I just love to appreciate the beauty of where we live …
What is the name of your business/organization?
Beyond Wrapture Day Spa.
What does your business/organization do?
We love to do our Spa Services & Esthetics treatments. The esthetic treatments include OPI Manicure & Pedicures using the OPI nail lacquer or using the Gel Colors. We do Speciality Facials and Microdermabrasion and our staff are fantastic. Our Spa Services are really varied from RMT Massages to detoxifying but soothing Aromatherapy Body Wraps. We have become know for our Vinotherapy treatments because they are very unique and have one of those treatments is like going out and buy an entire new body of skin….people absolutely love those services. Its peaceful and relaxing and we just love to see the difference our guests experience …. They look entirely different when they leave as to when they walked in the door – their face is bright and their body is fluid. Its wonderful to do work where you can see that day after day.
Where can people find you or your business online?
What is your Twitter account?
What is your mission?
At Beyond Wrapture we believe that as a person nurtures their three aspects of Wholeness; Body, Mind, & Spirit they will develop the courage and the confidence to step beyond limits previously set for themselves through genetic predisposition or environmental obstacles to become that which they are – Perfect, Whole & Complete.
If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
To have my business become immortal
Where do you want your business/organization to be in 5 years?
Still in business and with some interesting renovations I plan to do in those years.
Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
Elizabeth Arden and the Red Door Spa/Salons
What 3 qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Above all else Integrity, Honesty and Respect to ourselves and others
What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
There simply would be no Beyond Wrapture without them, nothing would be possible so thank you for helping me make my dream come true … I owe it to them to help them make their dreams come true.
How does your business/organization impact the community?
I know for certain that when people leave Beyond Wrapture they are calmer and kinder to every life they touch.
If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
Communication, Computer Technology, I want to upgrade our system – we are still on Windows 2003 server and as mentioned not really using Facebook and all the modern marketing techniques available to us.
If I could change 1 thing about Kelowna, it would be:
I would develop an overpass right on top of Hwy 97 so the through traffic could just go right through with off ramps available at certain intersections.
What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The view, the wine, the people & the variety of activities possible … sailing, skiing
My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Ashley Greenwood, Manager at Future Shop – always great service there, exceptional in fact.
Some general comments I would like to share are:
There has been a lot of people who have been truly supportive of Beyond Wrapture and I would like to put out some special thanks to them for the help they have provided me with through the years; Rick Maddison, Andrew Murdoch, Ashleigh Sommerville for all my fabulous “Rico” ads they write and produce for me. Robert Fine, Bruce Murray, Linda DaCosta, Christine Gilbert, David Low, Garry Campbell and Steve Schwartz for business, financial and legal advice. And so many more I cant think of right now plus each and every guest who has walked through our doors and all the present and past staff who have made 21 years in business possible. Thank you so much – may all your dreams come true, you certainly have helped me with mine. To everyone. I hope you had a very Merry Christmas & a Healthy & Prosperous New Year
Sincere appreciation. Debra
