In Focus | Shane Whittle of Boned, a Broth Company

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Shane G Whittle

What do you always find yourself saying?
“Shredding”

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Richard Branson would be great meet. We could hit the wind surfer for an ocean shred and afterwards relax over a steaming cup of broth and chat about the day to day management of his many companies, which are in so many sectors. I find that intriguing.

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
I am not sure of a specific award but I know I would like it to be something regarding the “prevention of cruelty to animals”.

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
Nelson Mandela, because he once said, “it always seems impossible until it’s done.” I live my life by that motto.

Who inspires you?
My parents and my two older sisters. Seeing how they have worked so hard over the years to earn what they have and still be happy and driven to find their own paths in this life, it teaches me there is no short cuts. If you want something you have to go out and work for it no matter if it is business or relationships, marriages or even having kids. At least enjoy the ride and stay fit from the inside out.

What are three things on your bucket list?
Climb Mount Everest, hike the pyramids, visit Jerusalem

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
“Luna” after one of my dogs. It is the Latin name for ‘moon’.

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
The day I have a child, as I am sure I will need some Bone Broth and coffee to handle the excitement and lack of sleep.

What are you passionate about?
Having a healthy lifestyle which is enjoyed through cooking fresh foods, fitness, outdoors, and happiness. I also like surrounding myself with driven people that share the same values.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Meeting my girlfriend at the gym while using a crutch after knee surgery from my soccer injury. I wasn’t physically at my best, but she still accepted my dinner date. The rest is history.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Probably founding Marley Coffee. I was able to create amazing taste profiles in a variety of coffees that people could wake up to around the world and enjoy every day which puts a smile on their face.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
Quails' Gate Winery because the food is exceptional and the views are breathtaking, all with professional service

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
Early morning shred at the gym with my coach Brandt Fralick of Prime Fitness and then hit the lake for some wake surfing.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Boned, a Broth Company

What does your business/organization do?
We cook world class bone broths from free range chickens and grass fed beef bones and organic vegetables and spices which are simmered for 14-18 hours utilizing a 200-year-old Slovakian recipe. This helps draw out over 58 grams of pure bone protein in our 500 ml container which is basically two servings.
We then freeze it for sale, without chemicals or synthetic additives. We strive to bring cooking back to the roots of history to alleviate people from buying chemically created foods, which are killing them. It is shocking how many people do not know what is in their baskets at the store. Brothing is a two million year old way of life and now it’s a new paleo type craze which we are over-joyed to be involved with.

Where can people find you or your business online?
www.bonedbroth.com

How do people connect with you on Linkedin?
ca.linkedin.com/in/sgwhittle

Where can people find your business on Facebook?
Boned Broth

What is your twitter account?
@bonedbroth

What is your mission?
“Fuel your life and heal your body.” We live by this by cooking only real first grade fresh ingredients. We refuse to use chemicals and synthetics, which most foods use these days to sustain months and even years of shelve life. We prepare and sell frozen.

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
To be the most ‘drank’ bone broth in Canada and to make our customers the healthiest and happiest they can be. Feeling great starts from what you put in your body first and not the other way around.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
Nationwide grocery distribution with pop up boned broth ‘to go’ windows like coffee stands to serve hot daily.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
I consider that we are the first to market on a grocery level. We are going to lead the field by standing by our quality and taste no matter how large we grow in terms of cooking within the kitchen.

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Trust, passion, and health

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
Be true to our customers by cooking the best possible broths no matter how busy we get. Quality over quantity.

How does your business/organization impact the community?
Our company impacts the community by providing a product that aids in a healthier community by only purchasing sustainable grown ingredients. People need to stop eating chemicals, which are toxic for their bodies, and be open to learning about old traditions that are of a pure, healthier choice and process. I like to say, “old is the new, new" when it comes to eating.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
The food GMO industry, and oh would I have some things to say……trust me!

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
Have more Yaletown like areas to have fun and socialize in for all ranges of age groups.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The friendly people first and the peacefulness of the views and the easy access to an unbelievable healthy lifestyle at your door step. And even better its home to the Boned, a Broth Company!
