What is your name?
Amber Davis.
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I am from Calgary and I have lived in Kelowna for three years now.
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My favourite person to hang out with is my niece, Scarlett. She’s the sweetest, smartest, funniest two-year-old I have ever met. She’s kind, caring and always making me laugh.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
That’s easy, if I could go anywhere, I would go to Graceland. Ever since I was a small child, I’ve been a huge fan of Elvis Presley. It was a gift my Grandmother gave me. I’ve always wanted to see where he lived.
What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
My favourite store would have to be either Worldly Accents or Dare To Dream. They both have such great and interesting stuff.
What is your favourite activity?
My favourite activity is swimming.
If you had to choose: pizza, tacos, or burgers?
Duh, Papito’s Pizza!
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
A friend and I had found a 50-year-old pogo stick. The rubber end was not so rubber and not so there. I got two good bounces in, then the third one I ended up on my face on the hard pavement. It was a good thing almost all my friends were watching.
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I’d have to say the Mindful Living class I took at COHA. That class completely changed my life. I can never thank Sharon Davison and all of the people at COHA enough for what they have done and given me.
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
My favourite childhood memory would definitely be the day my dad and I drove up to Red Deer to see The Guess Who with Randy Bachman. It was their Running Back through Canada tour. We danced in the stands and timed how long it took them to play American Woman with all of the solos. 12 minutes 45 seconds.
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I give back to my community a few ways. I’m a member of a women’s group. We do a fun activity that is supportive of the hosting member and we always include something to benefit the community. For example, at our Christmas party we didn’t bring gifts for each other, we brought things the women’s shelter could use. I also help out with charity work through radio stations that I work at part time.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
One thing I would change is that I’d have everyone in the world learn one language, maybe something like sign language. If we could all speak one language, maybe we could break down some communication barriers. Maybe it could bring us a little more peace and understanding of each other.
What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Swimming in the lake and riding my bike downtown through City Park and Waterfront Park.
Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
When I sneak away, I’m either at the top of Knox Mountain or I’m tucked away in my little home.
Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I’d like to see some positive changes along Leon Avenue. The homeless situation in any city breaks my heart. There’s so much more I wish I could do to help. I just hate to see people and animals hurting, scared, cold or hungry.
If you were granted one wish for work or in life, what would it be?
My one wish I’d like granted would be NO MORE CANCER!
Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
My gallbladder has been in the Doctor’s Learning Centre at a hospital in Calgary since 2000. I found it there a year later on a class field trip. I know that it's mine because I was the youngest person in North American to have a gallbladder out until 2007.
What is the name of your business/organization?
Wonder Klean.
What does your business do?
We do residential and commercial cleaning.
Why did you get into/start this business?
I started this business because the job situation in the valley isn’t great. It’s something I’m very good at and it’s a service many people want and/or need. It’s something I’ve been doing on the side for 10 years anyway.
What is the goal of your business?
We want to make the world a cleaner place.
What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
My greatest struggle has always been learning patience and believing that I deserve great things. I've struggled with believing that great things should, and could, happen to me.
If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
If I could do everything all over again, would I do them differently? Hmm, as hard and as painful as my life has been, I don’t think I would change anything. It’s made me who I am today and I really like myself now. So no, I’d keep everything the same.
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
I think it’s important to shop locally because it shows love and support for our friends and neighbours. It keeps our money in our city and our province which helps our economy get a bit better.
Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
I'd like to give a shout out to Mel. She's been my best friend over 30 years. She's always there for me no matter what. Thanks for always being so supportive my friend!
My nomination for the In Focus spotlight is:
