In Focus | Corey Anderson

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses, and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Corey Anderson.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I was born in Red Deer, Alberta and moved to Kelowna in 1981. I moved away in 2000 and lived in Pemberton, BC and Vancouver, BC until moving back to Kelowna December 2014.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My husband. We’ve been together for over 16 years and we still have fun together doing the simplest things.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
I wouldn’t go anywhere. Kelowna is so beautiful at this time of the year and there is so much to see and do.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
I like both Cranberry Junction and Sweet Little Things (owned by the same company) I always find creative and beautiful things there.

What is your favourite activity?
I lift weights at my gym. It makes me feel strong and empowered.

If you had to choose: pizza, tacos, or burgers?
Burgers, hands down.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
Slipping on a banana peel in high school. It was in between classes, so there were a lot of people around in the hallways. I’m sure it was great entertainment for those who got to witness the incident.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Making the decision to start my own business doing something that I am passionate and excited about.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
I loved it when my cousins visited me from Edmonton and we went to Flintstone Park. That was such a great attraction! I wish I could share it with my son.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I often volunteer at my son’s school for events and field trips. It is a great way to get out in the community, helping his class and I also get to spend more time with him. Last week we planted plants for the bees in Mission Creek Park.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
More peace, less anger. Help for those who need help, especially people suffering from mental illness.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Walking along the water by the Grand Hotel. It’s one of my favourite spots and it reminds me how lucky I am to be living in such a beautiful city.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
Sarson’s Beach by the water looking for heart shaped rocks. Its one of my favourite ways to relax when I need to think.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I would like to see more after-school programs for children. I think the city could provide some great programs that parents and children would enjoy. I know Kelowna library has some great programs, but it would be wonderful to have more options.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
Kelowna has some of the friendliest people I have ever met. I often start conversations with people and rarely is anyone ever offended or not willing to chat.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
I have four:
1) Start my own business
2) Visit Italy
3) Learn ASL
4) Write a children’s book

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I love to make jewelry. When I was living in Vancouver, I started my own jewelry business, Indie Charm. Since having my son, I haven’t had as much time to pursue this interest, but I am hopeful that one day, Indie Charm will make a come back.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest)
I am on Facebook both personally and for my business. You can also find me on Pinterest (another favourite pastime).

What is the name of your business/organization?
Organize My Space.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I have a passion for organizing and I like helping people. I also wanted to have the flexibility to be my own boss, set my own hours for the sake of my family and for our son, who is only going to be this young once.

What is the goal of your business?
To help residents of Kelowna to become better organized in their homes, offices and personal lives. Eventually, I would like to be people’s first choice when they think of organized spaces.

What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
I lost both my Father and Stepfather in the last seven years. It really threw me off balance. It was not something I ever expected or knew how to handle. But it made me stronger. You learn how to live with the hurt and turn it into something better.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I believe we all have a path, we learn along the way, either by the mistakes we make or the choices we make. So no, I would not do anything different.

What do you always find yourself saying?
Get rid of it!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
My husband and my son. We have the greatest adventures together and I appreciate any time we get to spend together when we're not in a rush to get out the door.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It’s important to support local businesses, as they are the people who make up our community and build this beautiful city into what it has become. I love to support local artisans, as I know how much patience and hard work goes into each masterpiece.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
My son, he is turning 7-years-old. He is such an amazing kid. He is imaginative, intelligent, kind and loving. I am proud to say I had something to do with that.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My friend Stacy Leduc. She owns her own cleaning business and is also a great mom. She is one of the reasons why I pursued starting my own business. She has been such a positive encouragement to me and I appreciate her friendship.

My choice for the KelownaNow In Focus spotlight is:
Stacy Leduc at Squeaky Clean Professional Cleaning Service.

Some general comments I would like to share are:
I am very excited to be starting this business in Kelowna. Kelowna is and always will be my home town. I grew up here so I have seen it grow into what it is today. I love to hear success stories of all the small businesses who make up this great city!
