People all over Canada took to social media on Friday to express their emotions as final respects were paid to the corporal killed in Ottawa on Wednesday.

Thousands of people took part in the procession for Cpl Nathan Cirillo along highway 407 in Ontario. The procession began at about 10:00 a.m. local time with the motorcade beginning its journey from Ottawa. Cars could be seen lined up and down the highway and people on the road, while others hung Canadian flags from overpasses.

A flood of emotion was spread across the internet from those unable to join the crowds along the roadway. With the hashtag #HighwayofHeroes messages can be seen from thousands of Canadians, many still in shock about the shooting that took place on Parliament Hill.

The procession will make its way to Hamilton, Ontario, the home town of Cirillo and his final resting place. His funeral is set for noon on Tuesday at Christ’s Church Cathedral on James Street North.
