Today marks the beginning of the Central Okanagan School District's #SoMeSummit, a student initiated and led 3-day conference. Held on November 27th, 28th, and 29th, the summit invites students, administrators, teachers, and parents to engage in district-wide conversations about what it means to be a positive, contributing digital citizen. The summit will also explore how the use of digital media can be used to enhance student learning.
Okanagan Mission Secondary School's Social Media class worked to help bring in Dr. Alec Couros as a keynot speaker for the event. Dr. Couros is the Professor of Educational Technology and Media from the Faculty of Education with the University of Regina. He will host sessions about what it means to be a digital citizen in our increasingly digital world.
An open forum parent night will also be held on Thursday, November 28th at 6:30pm at Hollywood Road Education Services. The forum will address the question, “How might we navigate the challenges and affordances of the digital age in the service of both protecting and empowering our children?”
The #SoMeSummit is the first of its kind in Canada and will feature student-led sessions that will provide opportunities for all school stakeholders to help construct the future of digital studens in the Central Okanagan.
