Volunteers Needed to Adopt a Road in Lake Country

Lake Country is hoping that residents will take a look at its new Adopt a Road program and the volunteers that make it a success.

The program gives private organizations, clubs, business sponsors, families and community groups the opportunity to assist the District in keeping Lake Country beautiful. Volunteers will provide labour to pick up the litter and debris along select rural roads in the community.

“We always have a good turnout for the 20-minute clean up each spring,” said Mayor James Baker. “Now we have a way to formally let people get involved on a regular basis. Engineering will even install road signs to acknowledge each group’s contribution and commitment to adopting a one kilometer section of road for a period of two years.”

Each volunteer group can schedule the roadside clean-up work whenever it suits them during daylight hours. Volunteers are asked to contact the District so all bagged litter is picked up by the engineering roads crew when the volunteers are finished.

At this time roads available within the program include:
Winfield Area: Bottom Wood Lake Road
Oyama Area: Oyama Road (Isthmus)
Carr’s Landing Area: Carr’s Landing Road
Okanagan Centre Area: Okanagan Centre Road West

Two years is the standard term for a road adoption period. Agreements may be renewed, revised or terminated after the initial two year period. Once the first clean-up has been completed in the area, the District will install and maintain Adopt-a-Road signs which display the name of the organization, community group or business sponsor volunteering in the area.
