Kelowna author and violinist to launch new children's book

Local violinist and author Sophie Armstrong is excited to launch her beautifully illustrated children’s book right here in Kelowna next month.

On Nov. 2, 2024, Once Upon a Bookstore on Tutt Street will host a book launch event for The Music Thief.

Children and families will gather for a day filled with music, creativity, and community.

Set in the magical town of Song, The Music Thief tells the story of Faith, a young girl who leads her community in reclaiming their stolen voices.

With themes of resilience, creativity, and self-expression, the book was illustrated by the talented British artist Pearl Bates.

The story draws inspiration from Sophie’s personal experiences as a mother to three neurodiverse children.

“I’m very excited to launch the book,” Sophie says. “It’s been 10 years in the making.”

“It’s all about self-expression, and overcoming the challenges to communicating freely and sharing what you have to say.”

In partnership with Autism Okanagan, the event will not only celebrate music and storytelling but will also raise awareness about autism.

A portion of proceeds from ticket sales and book purchases at the event will go toward supporting the organization’s programs.

The launch event at Once Upon a Bookstore is designed to be a fun, inclusive experience for all children, with special considerations for neurodiverse attendees.

With sessions at 9 am, 11 am, and 1:30 pm, the event promises a memorable experience.

Each session will begin with a reading of The Music Thief by Sophie, followed by a live musical performance from the author alongside guitarist Loni Moger.

There will also be interactive activity stations like a craft table where children can make their own musical instruments, a calming corner for those who need a break from the excitement and a music exploration station.

For those who can’t attend the launch event, The Music Thief is available for purchase on multiple platforms, including Google Play, Apple Books, Amazon, and from Once Upon a Bookstore.
