Hot springs are recreational pools that are geothermally heated. The water rises from the Earth’s crust and decreases in temperature as it rises closer to the Earth’s outer crust, which is what makes it a comfortable temperature to bathe in at around 38 to 42 degrees celsius.

First Nations people, who have been using hot springs for centuries, call them “medicine water,” and it is in fact true that hot springs do have medicinal purposes as they contain a variety of minerals that aid in curing disease.

Let's talk about lithium

While relaxing in the soothing, heated water, our bodies soak up the minerals found in natural hot springs. The minerals found in the water of the hot springs at Halcyon are sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and lithium, which are believed to heal a variety of medical conditions.

Studies have shown that the lithium-potent water of Halcyon Hot Springs has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can actually regenerate pathways in the brain. Lithium also has anti-depressant properties.

When taken in low doses, lithium has the potential to treat and prevent certain neurological diseases such as traumatic brain injuries, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, chronic pain, depression, anxiety and addictions.

Melt your stress away

Relaxing is always healthy. The minerals in the water reduce stress by relaxing tense muscles. As your body temperature rises in the bath and then dips down once you leave, overall blood circulation is increased helping you fall asleep easier and enjoy a deeper sleep.

Additionally, as oxygen flow increases, like when you exercise, an oxygenated circulatory system keeps your heart healthy and strong.

Relieve pain

Soaking in hot springs has wonderful benefits for those that suffer from chronic muscle pain, arthritis or fibromyalgia. Water also has the ability to support healthy joint movement while floating.

Furthermore, the heat from the baths combined with the pressure from the water creates a pain-blocking illusion, distracting our perception of pain and blocking the pain receptors in our body!

The hot springs’ sulfur content aids in eczema and psoriasis symptoms. Not only that, your skin will feel silky and smooth from the high silica content found in natural hot springs.

Quality time

Finally, one of the best benefits of floating in hot spring pools filled with mineral goodness is the quality time you get to spend with your friends and family!

Whether it be a romantic getaway with your significant other, a girls trip for the weekend or a well needed weekend vacation with the family, you will be sure to enjoy your time together while soaking up the springs and indulging in the view of the Kootenays. While you’re soaking in nature’s gifts, share conversation and stories with strangers who are there to relax as well!
