An officer inspected the vehicle when it arrived in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey and because of the large number of violations it was smashed to bits. The Mini is just one of dozens of vehicles intercepted at ports across the United States and over the past year CBP has increased targeting and inspections of imported vehicles. The officers have been targeting Minis and Land Rover Defenders specifically.

“Intercepting illegal and unsafe imports is a top priority for CBP,” said Brenda Smith, CBP’s assistant commissioner for International Trade. “Through Operation Atlantic, we are stopping illegally imported, unsafe vehicles from driving on our roadways, and at the same time, partnering with our colleagues in the UK to stop this criminal activity at its source.”

The Mini Cooper was seized on June 9th because the VIN on the vehicle was fraudulent, among other reasons. CBP officers have released photos of the destruction to show buyers of suspected fraudulent activity what will happen if they try to import these vehicles.
