Plane Crashes in France with More than 140 Onboard, Feared Dead

A plane has crashed in southern France and early reports indicate that there are no survivors.

The plane crashed near Barcelonnette and airline operator Germanwings has issued a statement, saying that they are monitoring the situation. French President Francois Hollande also released a statement about the A320 plane, saying that he wants to express his solidarity to the families of the victims of the accident.

There were reportedly 142 passengers on the plane along with six crew members, all feared dead. The flight originated at the Barcelona airport and took off early Tuesday morning.

Germanwings, a discount airline operated by Lufthansa, said they do not know what caused the crash but will release information to the public as soon as it becomes available.

Lufthansa has released the following statement regarding the crash:

"We must confirm to our deepest regret that Germanwings Flight 4U 9525 from Barcelona to Düsseldorf has suffered an accident over the French Alps. The flight was being operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft, and was carrying 144 passengers and six crew members.

"Lufthansa and Germanwings have established a telephone hotline. The toll-free 00800 11 33 55 77 number is available to all the families of the passengers involved for care and assistance.

"Everyone at Germanwings and Lufthansa is deeply shocked and saddened by these events. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the passengers and crew members."
