After nearly two decades, McDonald’s is back in downtown Kelowna.
The familiar fast-food chain opened its doors at 371 Bernard Ave. today, a two-storey location that offers a bit of a contrast sandwiched between popular local spots Momo Sushi and Bread Co.

That contrast has been the focus of criticism from some, as residents have voiced displeasure about the global brand on a street packed with small local businesses.
Downtown Kelowna Association executive director Paula Quinn addressed those concerns with a statement provided to KelownaNow in November.
She asked: “If someone wants a McDonald’s meal, they are going to have it, so why send them out of downtown to get it?"
“Having this option on Bernard keeps families, workers and visitors here, supporting neighbouring businesses and adding to the vibrancy of the core,” Quinn explained. “The DKA supports a diverse mix of offerings that give people reasons to stay downtown, not leave it.”

A general statement from the DKA argued that a mix of businesses, from small independent shops to globally-recognized brands, “creates the level of activity that supports our entire ecosystem.”
It also noted that increased foot traffic that a chain like McDonald’s brings can benefit neighbouring businesses, enhance safety through more ‘eyes on the street’ and contribute to a lively, welcoming environment.
The fast-food chain’s last location in the downtown area closed in 2007 and was at the corner of Harvey Avenue and Water Street.
Following a lengthy lawsuit between the City of Kelowna and McDonald’s, the City purchased the property in 2020 and tore down the abandoned building.
