Thoughtful fashion can save you time and money in the long-run

Fashion, comfort and sustainability shouldn’t be at odds with one another. That was the inspiration behind Shisako Design.

“I’m typically very casual but I do like to get dressed up for a night out with my husband or friends once in a while,” explains Shisako Design founder and designer Shannon Hickey. “Dressing up should not have to be a painful experience. I want to be comfortable in my heels and have a simple bag that fits my phone, keys, wallet and whatever else I need to carry with me.”

Shannon says that inspiration struck when she was packing up to move from Kelowna to Australia for a period of time and realized how many shoes she had accumulated over the years.

“I ended up donating them to Dress for Success Kelowna, but it was eye-opening to me how many pairs I’d bought just to wear once or twice.”

While living in Melbourne, Australia she was inspired by the small-scale designers and overall responsibility of the fashion community. Still, she was unable to find the exact kind of shoes and belt bags she wanted for herself. So, she started designing her own.

Working on the prototypes with the factories to get the perfect bags and shoes turned out to be a challenging, years-long process.

Now back in her hometown of Kelowna, Shannon is proud to be selling her own line of belt bags, with a line of shoes coming soon.

“I’m excited to provide a minimalist option that can be worn regardless of the season, occasion or latest trend,” says Shannon.

This isn’t the only business Shannon started that helps consumers make smart choices when it comes to spending and saving money. A number of years ago, she started a financial coaching business called Dollar Dame that educates and empowers women and families to make the best financial decision for themselves and their household.

She has also volunteered with the United Way and Kelowna Women’s Shelter.

“Working and saving at a young age was important for me to have choices and not be limited,” says Shannon. “So I know firsthand how gaining an understanding of investments, insurance and credit can really open up someone’s world and give them confidence.”

Shannon believes it is important to buy things that will be best for the long run, whether it’s investments or new pieces for your wardrobe.

Shisako uses materials that are eco-friendly that are ultimately bio-degradeable such as genuine leather, cotton, and natural tree rubber. The shoes and bags are also thoughtfully designed with the user in mind at every stage. They are timeless designs that are comfortable enough to wear again and again.
