5 things you need to know this morning: Feb. 27, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Trump praises Gretzky, says he 'should only support Canada'

US President Donald Trump has praised Wayne Gretzky as "the greatest Canadian" and said he doesn't want Canadians to give the hockey legend the cold shoulder over the duo's friendship. He wrote on his Truth Social platform: "Wayne and Janet, his wonderful wife, love Canada, and they should only support Canada, and whatever else makes the Canadian People, and Governor Justin Trudeau, happy."

2. Canada has 'golden opportunity' to revive ties with UK, Australia and New Zealand

Donald Trump's "shameful" behaviour toward Canada has provided a "golden opportunity" for Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand to cultivate closer ties, the leader of CANZUK International has said. That group, led by James Skinner, seeks to integrate the former British Empire countries' armed forces and to introduce enhanced mobility rights for their citizens. Former Tory leader Erin O'Toole has joined other prominent Canadians in backing the idea, but Canada has long feuded with the three countries over the dairy trade.

3. More people deported from Canada in 2024 than at any point since at least 2015: report

More people were deported from Canada in 2024 since at least 2015, according to a report from news agency Reuters. The overwhelming majority of the 7,300 deportees were asylum seekers whose refugee claims were rejected. The figure represents a 95 per cent increase over 2022 and an 8.4 per cent increase over 2023.

4. Supreme Court to stop posting on X

The Supreme Court of Canada has said it's going to stop posting on X. Supreme Court spokeswoman Stéphanie Bachand said the court will instead focus on "platforms that allow us to best serve the public and provide relevant information about the court's work within our limited resources."

5. Tributes pour in for actors Gene Hackman and Michelle Trachtenberg

Two American actors were found dead on Wednesday: Hollywood legend Gene Hackman, 95, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Michelle Trachtenberg, who was 39. Hackman was found dead with his wife, the pianist Betsy Arakawa.
