In an effort to promote Kelowna’s natural beauty and recreational opportunities, the City of Kelowna created Active by Nature.
Active by Nature is a “campaign designed to profile our outdoor infrastructure and position Kelowna as a premier destination for sport and outdoor activity for all ages and abilities.”
Development of the program began in 2014 with a $100,000 BikeBC grant, which was used to create a wayfinding signage initiative. The wayfinding project was designed to inform residents about the City’s network of hiking and biking trails, other recreational opportunities, and popular tourist destinations.
In order to further the program, the City of Kelowna Council approved ongoing annual funding to the tune of $20,000 in the 2015 budget, which helped to create the Active by Nature campaign.
The focal point of the Active by Nature campaign is a new interactive online map that highlights some of the best walking, running, cycling, hiking, paddling, and swimming routes in the region.

The mobile-friendly website went live on Monday, June 29th, and conveniently connects users to Google Maps for directions and to the BC Transit website for bus times and additional travel information.
“It is the way of the future and there’s huge opportunities here from a tourism perspective,” said Councillor Brad Sieben.
According to the City of Kelowna, the combined use of the wayfinding signage and the Active by Nature programs benefits the community by encouraging an active and connected community.
