A set of four rainbow crosswalks was revealed at the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Pandosy Street in downtown Kelowna on the morning of Thursday, August 6th. With a jubilant spirit, members of the Okanagan Pride Society were joined by their allies in donning purple shirts, picking up rainbow flags, and marching around the crosswalks shortly after 12pm on the same day.
The City has said that these crosswalks form “the finishing touch to the street and utility upgrades” in this area, and Joe Creron, the Divisional Director of Civic Operations for the City of Kelowna, has also iterated to media that the rainbow colouring did not cost any more than would usually have been spent on crosswalks; as a matter of fact, $4000 was saved by choosing to create an intersection that celebrates diversity where crosswalks were needing to be installed anyway. Altogether, approximately $13,000 was spent on the project when it would normally have cost $17,000.
KelownaNow's Lauren Hjalmarson attended the march on Thursday, August 6th, and has the story in this video.
